Cameroon captain Benjamin Moukandjo has attributed their success at the 2017 Afcon to the involvement of the nation’s legends that camped in Gabon throughout the tournament.
Two-time Afcon winners Roger Milla and Joseph Antoine ‘Jojo’ Bell as well as Bill Tchato, Patrick M’Boma, Geremi Njitap and for the final Samuel Eto’o were present to encourage the young generation of Indomitable Lions to a surprise victory.
Speaking to supersport.com, Moukandjo said, “It was very good to have our Cameroonian football legends in Gabon. They have been close to us and given us advice throughout the tournament.”
The legends resided at Le Meridien Hotel, where the Indomitable Lions camped for their group A games before moving to Franceville for their quarterfinal clash with Ghana.
Meetings with the players, sharing meals and one-on-one talks in the lobby kept the Cameroonian players in line with their target, which was to qualify for the quarterfinals.
However, Moukandjo admitted that no matter the advice to his side, it would have been useless if they did not have the determination and commitment to execute what they were being told.
“We focused on our strength against Egypt and not the opponent. The winning attitude was the first step to the trophy,” said Moukandjo, who has written his name in history among the Cameroonian greats who lifted the coveted trophy, along with former captains like Rigobert Song.
Cameroon will host the next Afcon in 2019 as they look to win a back-to-back title, as they did in 2000 and 2002.
