Ferroviario Da Beira fought back to settle for a 1-1 draw against USM Alger in their Caf Champions League quarterfinal, first leg match at the Estádio do Chiveve in Beira on Saturday.

The hosts pushed for an early goal in an effort to assert their place in the driver's seat, but the visitors were stubborn at the back.

Alger were dealt a huge blow when Okacha Hamzaoui was injured and coach Paul Put had to substitute him with four minutes to go to the interval.

With both sides chasing an early goal in the opening half, there were no clear-cut scoring chances and it was 0-0 at halftime.

However, their return from the tunnel saw the Algerians putting the hosts under pressure and they managed to break the deadlock.

Oussama Darfalou found the back of the net in the 63rd minute as he managed to beat the Ferroviario goalkeeper after an assist by Mokhtar Benmoussa.

The hosts pushed for an equaliser and their efforts were rewarded in the 89th minute through Fabrice Kanda.

The two giants fought hard for a winning goal in the dying stages of the match, but none could find the back of the net.

The return leg will be staged at Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 al-Jaza’ir in Algiers on Saturday, 23 September.
